World of Warcraft finally dethroned

It's nice to see a breath of fresh air in the otherwise pretty stale PC sales chart. The NPD Group has just released the data for the United States for the week spanning from February 15 to 21 and it seems that, for the first time in quite a while, World of Warcraft, the MMO created by Blizzard, is not the best sold game on the PC.

WoW has been brought down by a RTS from Relic that you might know as Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II. Unfortunately, the NPD Group is not making public the sales figures for each game, so we don't know how much the game actually sold during its launch week.

With Dawn of War II at number one, and World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King swearing revenge in second spot, the rest of the chart is pretty stable. There are no less than three The Sims 2 packages in the top ten. Double Deluxe sits at number three, Deluxe is at number four, while Apartment Life is at number nine.

There are two other World of Warcraft-branded products in the top ten, in the form of World of Warcraft: Battle Chest and the original World of Warcraft, which hold the sixth and seventh places. Spore, from Electronic Arts and Maxis, continues to stay in the top ten at number five, while Crysis Warhead holds the last spot.

The PC game chart is likely to see further changes soon, as 2009 will bring some pretty big PC games into play. This week sees the release of Empire: Total War, the next game in the long running strategy series from Creative Assembly, while further down the line, players will be able to get their hands on The Sims 3 sometime in June, and Blizzard's StarCraft II.
