David Slade, a relatively unknown director in Hollywood, has been officially assigned to helm the third film in the “Twilight Saga,” “Eclipse.” Since evidence surfaced yesterday that Slade held in much contempt the entire franchise – or at least did at one point in time – the director was forced to issue an official apology to all fans, via Twilight Lexicon, the largest fan community of the kind.

A while ago, Slade made the mistake of speaking his mind on the “Twilight” franchise, basically saying he would rather be submitted to unimaginable torture techniques than be forced to sit through it. In the meantime, Summit Entertainment chose him as the director for the third film and, obviously, fans are not having any of the irony in this situation. Following pressure from the fan community, Slade is officially saying how sorry he is for speaking up his mind before even seeing the film – because that’s what happened, he assures fans.

“I would like to address some statements that I made regarding Twilight. When I made these comments, I had neither seen the film nor read the books. I was promoting a comedy short film that I had made for Xbox and every pop culture subject was seen as a possible comedy target. I was being silly and none of the statements were from the heart. Of course, I have since seen the movie and read the books and was quickly consumed with the rich storytelling and the beautifully honest characters that Stephanie Meyer created.” Slade says for Twilight Lexicon.

Having made those crude remarks does not mean that he won’t do justice to “Eclipse,” Slade further says, as neither does it imply he will be indifferent to the project or not give it his best. “I would like to reassure everyone involved that I am invested in making the best film that I am humanly capable of, and that I am acutely aware of the power of the original books we serve. Please be rest assured this statement is absolutely from the heart.” the director adds.

On a final note, the comments that got the entire “Twilight” community up in arms and yelling blood (literally) were as follows, and were directly related to what Slade would choose between certain death and having to watch the vampire movie: “Twilight drunk? No, not even drunk. Twilight on acid? No, not even on acid. Twilight at gun point? Just shoot me.”
