id Software's Steve Nix says it makes perfect sense

What did I tell you? The world just can't get enough of Nintendo's DS. Evil Avatar's title for this piece of news - "Is the DS "Doomed?" didn't fool me one bit. How could it be doomed? There's nothing out there competing with it, as far as sales figures are concerned. The news is actually about Nintendo's DS getting the engine behind Doom RPG and Orcs & Elves, from mobile games, as Director of business development for id Software, Steve Nix says it's what they're currently considering.

"We just started talking about that," said Nix, when pressed on the subject. "I was just talking to John (Carmack) about that yesterday, and we thought yeah, that makes sense. We've just been busy with a few things, and just haven't gotten around to it, but it's good technology and it makes sense to license it out, so that's probably something we'll start talking about. Cellphone and DS," reads the man's statement as posted up on Gamasutra.com.

"What's interesting is that a lot of people who do try to write their own cellphone and DS engines, they make a lot of the same mistakes that the guys are making a lot of the same mistakes they made on the PC and the early consoles," Nix continued.

Of course, such statement begs the question: are DS gamers going to get Doom RPG and Orcs & Elves, along with the technology's new licensing? No, let me rephrase that: are DS gamers going to get Doom RPG?, period - Because Orcs & Elves has already been confirmed for a release on the DS, launching during the upcoming holiday season.

Nintendo's handheld has seen ports of big titles such as Tomb Raider, or NFS Carbon: Own the City and it's soon getting Bungie's highly acclaimed Halo. Yes, Halo for the DS, if you can imagine. The truth is, as long as the platform sells, I don't see why Valve wouldn't want to tap it a little with their Counter Strike or Half Life franchises.
