The “next generation” of DROID has been unveiled. As previously rumored, the handset in question is none other than the DROID X by Motorola, set to be added within a matter of weeks in Verizon Wireless' lineup of DROID devices, which already includes the high-end, highly popular DROID by Motorola. With a release date set for July 15, the new DROID X by Motorola is expected to feature a price tag of $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and upon the signing of a two-year contract agreement with the carrier.

“Nine months ago, we made a commitment to our customers to bring the openness of Android to the Verizon Wireless network,” said John Stratton, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. “Since then, we have introduced the top-selling Android phone in the marketplace today – the DROID by Motorola. DROID X takes that commitment to another level with exclusive content, faster processing speeds, and, of course, the reliability of our network.”

The specifications list for DROID X includes a 4.3-inch touchscreen display that boasts a WVGA (480 x 854 pixel) resolution, coupled with an 8-megapixel photo snapper with Dual LED, auto focus, and video recording capabilities, Wi-Fi 802.11 n, Bluetooth, Micro USB, HDMI Micro Connector, 3.5 mm headset jack and CDMA 800/1900, EVDO rev. A connectivity options, in addition to the 8GB on board memory, complemented by a pre-installed 16GB microSD card (supports up to 32GB of additional storage space). With a 1540 mAh battery inside, the phone weighs in at 155 grams, while measuring 65.5 x 127.5 x 9.9 mm.

The new mobile phone runs under Google's Android 2.1 operating system, which should be upgraded to the new Android 2.2 solution later during the summer, enabling support for Adobe Flash Player 10.1. In the meantime, we should mention a wide range of services and applications the handset already supports, including BLOCKBUSTER On Demand via V CAST Video, or Google Maps, Google Maps Navigation (BETA), Google Latitude, Google Maps Street View, and eCompass, all powered by the mobile phone's built-in GPS receiver.

“Motorola designed DROID X to push the extreme limits of Android innovation, and enable you to do even more with your mobile device. We are breaking down barriers so that you can experience the Web the way it was meant to be and create, share and view content like never before, either in your hand or in your home. Enterprise users will also find DROID X appealing with features including push e-mail and live widgets for e-mail and calendar updates,” Sanjay Jha, co-chief executive officer of Motorola and chief executive officer of Motorola Mobile Devices and Home business, commented.
