14 DAY TRIAL // Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless debuted at the beginning of last month its first handsets running under Google's Android operating system, namely the Motorola DROID, which sports the Eclair flavor of the platform (Android 2.0), and the HTC DROID Eris, running under the older Cupcake flavor of Android (1.5).
The purchase of a Motorola DROID or an HTC DROID Eris from Verizon enabled users to also acquire a second device for free on a two year contract agreement, but none of the DROIDs was among the offered for free handsets. However, starting today, those who purchase a DROID Eris from Verizon also have the possibility to get a second one for free upon the signing of a two-year contract agreement for each of the phones.
The inclusion of DROID Eris in the free BOGO offer from Verizon was only rumored until recently, now one can see the $99 handset listed on the carrier's website with the “Buy the DROID ERIS by HTC and Get a select phone FREE” tag next to it, and with the same HTC DROID ERIS showed in the BOGO offer. Having two such phones for the price of one, and also half the price of Motorola DROID, doesn't sound like a bad deal in the end.
Other handsets that can be snagged for free upon the purchase of a DROID Eris include the LG VX5500, the LG Glance and the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230 smartphone. Verizon seems to have expanded the BOGO offer to an even larger number of smartphones than before, and it should be interesting to see how long the promotion will be in place.
