The actual handset shouldn't be far behind

Mobile phone maker Motorola has not announced officially the upcoming Android-based DROID 2 device as of yet, but it seems that we're moving closer and closer to that official unveiling. The true successor of DROID by Motorola, launched last year, is expected to arrive on the market sometime in mid-August, which means that we're only several days apart from its unveiling the world.

However, until that happens, the small pieces of info that emerge into the wild now and then would have to suffice. Among these small details, we have photos of DROID 2 cases that started to land at Best Buy, and which suggest that the actual mobile phones might not be too far behind. One should agree that this would not be the first time when accessories for a device are shipped to stores a few weeks ahead the official launch.

Another proof of the near release day for the third DROID Verizon adds to its offering from Motorola came not too long ago in the form of a leaked user manual. The document offers a nice range of details on the upcoming DROID 2 by Motorola, including a confirmation of the device being shipped with Android 2.2 Froyo right from the start.

Unfortunately, although the emergence of these DROID 2 cases at Best Buy (via Engadget) do prove that the launch date is near, no specific details on when Big Red and Motorola plan on making the new Android-based device available for purchase emerged. Nor on its pricing or on the special offerings, if any, Verizon might have in store for its customers with this device.

The second DROID by Motorola should prove a great competitor to Apple's iPhone too, just as the first DROID and the DROID X by Motorola did. It is expected to land on the market with the same sliding design as the original device, complemented by a large touchscreen display, but with welcomed enhancements too, including a faster processor, increased amount of RAM, and more available storage space.
