On Friday, DJ AM’s body was found lifeless in his NYC apartment, after not being seen or heard of for days. Paramedics pronounced the star, real name Adam Goldstein, dead on the scene, concluding that he might have OD’ed based on the drug paraphernalia scattered around the house. Toxicology results are underway, but reports claim that, if anything, DJ AM was not suicidal, as TMZ can confirm.

The shocking death of the 36-year-old star was initially linked to the severe depression he had reportedly been suffering from for almost a year, ever since he and best friend Travis Baker had been the only two survivors of a terrible plane crash that claimed the lives of other four passengers. According to unnamed sources speaking to TMZ, it was the post-traumatic shock that pushed DJ AM back to a life of drugs – he had been clean for nine years before that –, as doctors started prescribing him anti-anxiety medication so that he could deal with his fear of flying. Nevertheless, suicidal he was not, the same sources vouch.

“Law enforcement sources directly connected with the death of DJ AM tell us that his death was the result of an accidental overdose and not a suicide – and there is a tragic, ironic twist of fate. Our sources say DJ AM, a recovering addict, developed a dependency to Xanax and other benzodiazepines (a group of drugs used to treat anxiety) as a direct result of the plane crash a year ago. We’re told AM (aka Adam Goldstein) developed a tremendous anxiety over flying – something he had to do frequently for his job. We’re told doctors began prescribing Xanax and other anti-anxiety medications to relieve his fear, but the benzos triggered a relapse into addiction. We’re told benzos are particularly dicey for recovering addicts.” TMZ writes.

Sources claim that the relapse into the drug addiction was “recent,” which would explain how DJ AM might have accidentally overdosed on what police believe to be a lethal combo of cocaine and benzos. The same insiders say that the star’s death had nothing to do with the recent breakup from his girlfriend, as reports over the weekend hinted that might have been the straw that broke the camel’s back in the sense of pushing him to the edge and making him suicidal.

DJ AM, a regular presence on the club scene, was one of the most respected and popular disc-jockeys in the US. The former fiancé of Nicole Richie, AM was friends with countless A-listers, which only made news of his passing all the more shocking. He was only 36 years old.
