Last week, Taiwan officials accused the Philippine Coast Guard of opening fire on a fishing vessel and killing one fisherman. Since the Philippines refused to issue an official apology, Taiwanese hackers started attacking Filipino government websites, disrupting them for several hours.

Filipino hacktivists immediately launched a retaliation campaign, taking down a number of Taiwan government websites, including the one of country’s president.

According to GMA News, the websites of Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Coast Guard Administration, the Presidential Office, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, and the Central News Agency have been disrupted by distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks.

The websites of other government and private organizations have also been targeted.

Taiwan officials reported that the origin of the attacks was traced back to the Philippines.

The cyberattacks come after massive DDOS attacks launched by Taiwanese hacktivists against several Philippines government websites.
