If problems continue

There's a lot of excitement around DC Universe Online, the superhero based MMO which is being developed by Sony Online Entertainment for the PlayStation 3 and the PC. The developers say that the game will allow  players to become superheroes on their own and be drawn in a complex storyline where they can fight alongside their favorite heroes, like Superman, Batman or the Green Lantern. Acclaimed comic book writer Geoff Johns has been recently brought on board to pen the game's back story and to provide the development team with the background they need to create a game that is true to the DC canon.

But the development process seems to have hit a trouble spot, as the cross platform play between the PlayStation 3 console and the PC is proving hard to implement. It might be that the finished product will feature two wholly different universes, one for PC gamers and the other for those who prefer the Sony made gaming platform.

Chris Cao, who is the creative director of the Austin studio of Sony Online Entertainment, told MTV Multiplayer that “We actually think that DCUO being an action game translates very easily across, and there's not really that many differences in the gameplay. But one of things with MMOs is that we update them; we add new stuff. When we add stuff to the PC side it's a different route; going through the PlayStation Network and getting it to our console person is a lot different than getting it to our PC person”.

The issue is that console updates must go through a certification process, which usually takes some time, which means that PC updates might be held back while the PlayStation 3 certification process is complete.

The teams are now working on creating a system that will allow all players of DC Universe Online to play in the same universe. We'll report back with news regarding their progress.
