Cameron Diaz, having repeatedly spoken out on topics such as marriage and validating oneself through a family life, is now also coming to the defense of the women who are usually shunned by society for their decision not to have children. A single woman herself and bent on not becoming a mother anytime soon, the actress says people should not judge a woman by whether she has children or not, especially when the planet is already overpopulated and this decision could be seen as a healthy one from this perspective.

Cosmopolitan magazine got to sit down with Cameron and pick her brain on several issues, among which motherhood was also included. She’s not the type of person to say “never” to certain things, Cameron reveals, but as far as children go, she knows for a fact that she does not want any at this point in time. This is precisely why she understands all the other women who opt out of motherhood, and would like to plead with the public not to judge them solely on this account.

“I think women are afraid to say that they don’t want children because they’re going to get shunned.” Diaz tells Cosmopolitan. However, she believes times are a-changin’ as they say, and, soon enough, childless mothers will be able to speak more freely about their decision never to give birth. “But I think that’s changing too now. I have more girlfriends who don’t have kids than those that do. And honestly? We don’t need any more kids. We have plenty of people on this planet.” Cameron says in her usual frank manner.

Still, that’s not to say that she wouldn’t change her mind if she had the chance or if she met the right man with whom to start a family. The thing is, she explains, that this hasn’t happened yet. “I never say never. I don’t know what’s going to happen. I could end up adopting half a dozen kids, or I could end up being the next ‘octomom’.” the Hollywood stunner further explains.

In the same interview, Cameron, who could be regarded as a fervent campaigner for the deidealization of the celebrity culture, also stresses that people, and impressionable teens in particular, should be warned that what they see in the media is not a projection of reality. This way, she says, they would know not to expect more from others and, what’s most important, from themselves. “I think there should be a disclaimer the same way there is on a pack of smokes – these people do not really look this way.” Diaz adds.
