Activision is one of the biggest companies in the gaming industry, which it has shaped through its projects, but it is most famous for its very profitable franchises, like Guitar Hero or World of Warcraft. However, a very successful one is the Call of Duty shooter series, which has seen the latest installment in the form of World at War.

While before its launch analysts deemed it as having no chance against other shooters, like Gears of War 2 or Resistance 2, the game, developed by Treyarch, has managed some record-breaking sales.

Now, the studio has just unveiled that, ever since its release in November 2008, the title has sold over 11 million units. That's right, 11 million, for a game that went back to World War II and wasn't very appreciated by critics.

The success also spread to the downloadable map packs, as the second one followed in the steps of Map Pack 1 and reached over 2 million downloads. It seems that new multiplayer adventures and maps for the extremely popular zombie cooperative mode are in high demand from CoD players.

“These outstanding feats would have never been possible without the continued dedication and support from all of the loyal Call of Duty fans,” the studio said in a post on the CoD website. “For that, we at Treyarch and Activision would like to extend our sincerest Thank You. We're honored and humbled to have one of the greatest online communities in video game history behind our products!”

This makes it even more certain that Modern Warfare 2 will be one of the best-selling titles of this year. But until November, we still need to wait for it and quench our thirst of Call of Duty with World at War.
