Sony says that the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the first person shooter from Infinity Ward and Activision Blizzard, has attracted millions of players to the PlayStation Network, the service which powers multiplayer gaming on the PlayStation 3 home console.

Jack Tretton, who is both the president and the Chief Executive Officer at Sony Computer Entertainment of America, stated, “In just over a week, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has been hugely successful on PlayStation 3, and continues to drive millions of gamers globally to PlayStation Network with its unprecedented and engaging online multiplayer experience.”

He added, “The Call of Duty franchise is one of the biggest entertainment brands on the planet, delivering gameplay experiences like no other which is why we're also excited to bring the Call of Duty franchise to our highly-anticipated next generation portable, PlayStation Vita, where we expect fans will continue their dedication to the most amazing Call of Duty experiences whether in the home or on the go.”

The Vita will be launched on December 17 in Japan and after about two months in North America and Europe and it is not clear when a version of the new Call of Duty will be released on the handheld.

Earlier during the week Microsoft posted some figures about Modern Warfare 3 activity on its own Xbox Live service, saying that 7 million hours of multiplayer games were registered on launch day and 3.3 million unique players logged in to engage with friends and rivals.

Since the current generation of home console has been introduced the Xbox 360 has been seen as the platform that attracts most first person shooter fans and generates the biggest multiplayer activity, even if they need to pay for the Gold tier of the Live service.

Modern Warfare 3 has shattered all records when it comes to sales and revenue since it was launched last week.
