QNAP has just announced that the company has updated its product lineup to feature a new series of Intel Atom-powered TurboNAS servers that are based on Intel’s recently unveiled Cedar Trail platform.

The new NAS server series includes 2, 4, 5, 6, or 8-drive models and are destined to cater to the needs of small and medium-sized businesses.

Outside of the new Atom processors, the servers support the same features as their predecessors, including a wide selection of RAID modes (RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 5+ hot spare, and 6+ hot spare) together with online RAID capacity expansion, online RAID level migration, and RAID recovery, depending on the model.

Data safety can also be increased by the inclusion of redundant power supplies as well as volume level AES 256-bit encryption, some models even featuring a DOM architecture with the ability to boot from dual operating systems in the event of a failure.

As usual, QNAP's new offerings fully embrace the cloud computing trend being VMWare and Citrix ready and Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V clusters compliant, while also featuring iSCSI, MC/S, MPIO, SPC-3, and thin provisioning support.

No details regarding the performance of the NAS servers were provided by QNAP.

"QNAP continues to innovate and evolve NAS beyond what many thought was possible," said Ivan Hsu, product marketing director of QNAP Inc.

"During these challenging economic times QNAP has continued on a path of strong growth due to our unrelenting commitment to excellence and delivering products that meet and exceed the expectations of our broad range of customers, from the consumer right up to the most demanding enterprise data center," concluded the company’s rep.

QNAP hasn’t mentioned when the new TurboNAS servers are available, nor for how much they will retail.
