Storage specialist, Synology has just announced the introduction of a new NAS server in the DS-series, the DS-712+, designed for small and medium businesses who require a high performance and scalable 2-bay NAS.

At the heart of Synology's latest creation stands an 1.8GHz dual-core processor with link aggregation enabled that allows the DS712+ to reach sequential read and write speeds of 180.91MB/sec and 105.59MB/sec, respectively, under RAID 1 configuration.

To ensure high availability to stored data, the DS712+ features front mount hot swappable drive bays, as well as failover support for the dual Gigabit Ethernet connections installed.

Outside of increasing the performance of the DS712+, Synology also worked on making the unit more silent in operation compared to its predecessor by adding two side ventilations and a larger 92mm fan.

According to Synology, these improvements have increased the overall airflow and minimized the noise level to 19.2dB(A).

Other features include iSCSI support, integration into ADS and LDAP environments, compatibility with VMWare vSphere, Citrix XenServer and Microsoft Hyper-V virtaulization solutions and the ability to work together with the DX510 expansion module that adds support for another 7 hard drives.

“Synology DS712+ presents tremendous opportunity for SMB owners wishing to have the flexibility of scaling up to a larger storage solution from a smaller form factor,” said Chad Chiang, product manager of Synology Inc.

“As small businesses grow, so does their data. With Synology DX510 expansion unit, the DS712+ offers a unique solution by scaling up a compact 2-bay NAS server into a 7-bay storage on-the-fly, providing up to 21TB of storage capacity," concluded the company's rep.

The Synology DS712+ and the DX510 expansion unit should be available in the coming weeks as the company has already started shipping the device to its worldwide partners, but pricing hasn't been specified.
