Sometime in 2009

After a busy 2008, in which it added a variety of new game modes and even motorbikes to its Burnout Paradise title, Criterion is getting ready for another busy year, in which it plans to release four updates for the game.

The second of them will be dubbed the Legendary Cars Pack, and will offer players a chance to play around with four new cars, all of them sporting a very retro look, which differs from the sleek curves of the cars you can currently use in the racing game.

Criterion is clearly aiming at creating vehicles that are based on famous cars that have entered the imagination of the gaming public. The first car they show off is what they call the Jansen 88 Special, and it is pictured in the image accompanying this article. Taking a closer look at it, it becomes clear that its inspiration is the De Lorean, which was modified in the Back to the Future series, in order to serve as a time machine for Doctor Emmett Brown.

In the game, the car will leave burning tire marks, as you go into boost mode, and it will also have the ability to hover in mid air. The name of the vehicle has been changed, because Criterion does not want to infringe on anyone's copyrights. Yet, the inspiration is clearly there for all to see it. Sadly, the mechanics of Burnout Paradise do not allow for any time traveling, so that ability is not included in the new car pack.

Criterion has also announced the names of the other three cars in the pack. We will soon find out more about the Cavalry Bootlegger, the Manhattan Spirit and the GT Nighthawk. The general expectation is that at least one of the above-mentioned cars is based on KITT, the car that David Hasselhoff used to talk to in a famous TV show.
