Beta bound

One of the biggest videogame launches of the year should be Halo: Reach, a new title set in the universe of Master Chief, which might be the last Bungie works on. And with the beta stage for the game coming up on May 3 for all those who have the special code offered with last year's Halo 3: ODST, the team working on the game delivered a little more information on the new multiplayer mode that will be included in the videogame.

Named Invasion, the mode will be delivered in the beta on the Boneyard map, and Bungie is saying that as players engage one another and begin raking up kills, new sections of the map will be offered up for exploration. There will be three phases for the map development in a multiplayer match and fresh weapons and vehicles will come into play to change the dynamic of the game and possibly shift the power balance between players.

These can now find a similar concept employed by DICE in their first person shooter Battlefield: Bad Company 2 in the form of the Rush mode, although it's safe to say that Bungie will put its own spin on the concept. Chris Carney, who is the multiplayer designer on Halo: Reach, also unveiled two new weapons on GameTrailers TV: a plasma launcher and a grenade launcher designed by the human forces for use by the Spartans. As always, more information will be delivered in June, at E3.

Carney was also asked about Firefight, one of the game modes offered in Halo 3: ODST, and whether it would be coming back in Reach. He avoided offering a clear answer, saying that he was only talking about the beta and was “not sure what those guys have planned” for the full launch. Microsoft and Bungie plan to launch Halo: Reach in the fall of 2010 exclusively for the Xbox 360 home console.
