Brash first-person shooting and kicking

Epic Games and People Can Fly offered a more in-depth look at their latest game, Bulletstorm, during Electronic Arts' E3 press conference earlier today. Cliff Bleszinski, alongside two other developers of the project, presented the title, talking about the freedom offered to the players to defeat their enemies and the way it rewarded the skillful use of the gameplay mechanics.

Bulletstorm is a brash first-person shooter that mixes guns with close quarters combat, letting players combine various kicks, slides with an energy leash of some sort and the many weapons to kill mutants in many different and outrageously fun ways. As one progresses through the game, the creative disposing of enemies is awarded with points that permit the upgrade and unlocking of new weapons. These, in turn, will help the players execute even more crazy kills and get even more points.

There is a story to accompany this mad gameplay. Bulletstorm tell the adventures of Grayson Hunt and Ishi Sato, ex-members of a peacekeeping force that have been unfairly exiled on a planet full of cannibalistic mutants. Their goal is to escape the planet alive and exact revenge on the commander that betrayed them and left them die.

Live footage was presented at the conference, detailing the mechanics and the atmosphere of the game. The tone of Bulletstorm is deliberately brash and macho, with the characters using a lot of profanity and crazy one-liners in their dialogue. The gameplay looked truly spectacular, really showcasing what the developers meant when they said the best way to describe Bulletstorm was the expression “symphony of blood.”

Gamers can kick a door to crush a mutant behind it, or they can use their leash to pull off Scorpion-like moves, dragging the enemies to them and then kicking them into an electric generator for a really satisfying finish. The graphics are really good, expanding a lot on what the Unreal Engine 3 can do on both next-generation consoles and the PC. Bulletstorm will be released on the 22nd of February, 2011, on the PC, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.
