Mobile phone carrier Vodafone Australia has just announced that its BlackBerry Bold 9900 users can now download and install new software on their devices.

This is no OS upgrade for the device, but merely a maintenance update for it, and the wireless carrier explains all about it in a recent blog post.

The mobile phone operator starts by explaining that the update will be delivered to users via the desktop PC.

“The BlackBerry 7.0 maintenance software release for the BlackBerry 9900 is now available to install via your PC Sync,” the company notes.

For that, users will need to have the BlackBerry Desktop Software installed on their computers (it can be downloaded from Softpedia too), and the handset will have to be connected to the computer through the USB cable that came with the mobile phone.

As Vodafone notes, you will not have to know too much about how to apply the update, as the Desktop Manager will get you through all the steps of the installation process.

The new software comes with BlackBerry App version 7.0.0.474 and Baseband Version 5.0.0.645, while packing a nice range of enhancements.

The list of changes includes:

1. Enhancement of core BlackBerry features including: a) Video playback performance b) Audio playback performance c) Camera capture reliability d) Device themes 2. And bug fixes including; a) Captured image orientation b) Overlapping text in email c) Other minor issues 3. Enhancement of Battery life 4. Various localization and translation fixes

Before proceeding with the update process, users should make sure that the BlackBerry Bold 9900 has a fully charged battery inside, so that the installation will go smoothly all the way.

Moreover, they should perform a backup of all files on the device before kicking off the installation, so that nothing important is lost in case something goes wrong.
