Canadian mobile phone maker Research In Motion is expected to bring to the market some new devices in the not too far future, and the recently spotted BlackBerry 8980 might be one of them, it seems.

The yet unannounced mobile phone was just spotted at the Federal Communications Commission, and a nice range of details on its capabilities have emerged as well.

The smartphone, sporting the model number 8980, might easily land on the market as the successor for the Curve 8900, while also expected to become the replacement for the older device.

In addition to the info that emerged at FCC on the mobile phone's specs, we can also have a look at the photos that were unveiled with the phone.

When looking at these photos, one can easily spot the familiar look of the series, that's for sure, especially with that 8900 keyboard on its front (though the overall design points at Bold 9700 in a way, BGR notes).

Among the hardware specifications that were brought to light for the yet unannounced BlackBerry 8980, we can count a 3.2-megapixel photo snapper with flash, as well as an optical trackpad, which should go nicely with that full QWERTY keyboard it also includes.

The mobile phone should also include support for quad-band GSM/EDGE radios, as well as for Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth connectivity options. The mobile phone should also include a 3.5mm headset jack.

These would be about all of the specs that were unveiled via the available FCC documentation, but more should be made official when RIM decides to announce the BlackBerry 8980 to the world.

In the meantime, we should note that the user manual seems to point at BlackBerry OS 5, and not the newly released BlackBerry OS 6, which already arrived on shelves on Torch or Bold 9780.

All in all, we should expect for the new mobile phone to be announced as a rather affordable BlackBerry device, whenever RIM decides to bring it to the market. Keep an eye on this space for more info on this.
