As some have speculated for some time now

Even if initially Bioshock was announced for the PC and next generation consoles, we now only have a PC and a Xbox 360 versions to play around with. But that situation is about to change, as there is now official confirmation regarding the PlayStation 3 version of the multi-million selling dystopian shooter.

Hints about a PS3 version have been dropped by the developers since the time that the PC demo of the game was released, back in August 2007. A new wave of rumors has surfaced last month, as the developers at 2K Marin, who are now in charge of the Bioshock intellectual property, put out an announcement regarding an open position for a level designed that is familiar with the Bioshock game and with the Sony gaming console.

Now, a United Kingdom PS3 magazine has offered an official confirmation, running a segment that aims to show what improvements the PlayStation 3 offer has over the PC and the Xbox 360 versions. No clear release date is announced, but it needs to be no later than fall if the game hopes to get some good sales numbers.

It's only natural for a version that is probably being launched during fall to contain all of the new content that Bioshock has already received. On one hand, new tonics and new plasmid based powers are to be expected. On the other hand, a new control scheme, designed specifically for the PlayStation 3, will be implemented. And we might also see a few new levels for the game, which might justify the need for 2K Marin to hire a new level designer.

Such a port of the game is just an attempt by 2K to tie gamers over until Bioshock 2, also in development at 2K Marin, gets a little more meaty. It might prove a good offer for those that own a PS3 and who might want to get their hands on one of the most interesting games of last year, but it won't be much more than a port.
