Video game developer Irrational Games and publisher 2K Games have announced that the upcoming BioShock Infinite will feature an all new game mode called 1999 Mode, which is specifically designed to challenge players and increase their enjoyment of the game.

The new mode will be harder and, at the same time, more rewarding than all other difficulty modes included in BioShock Infinite.

Players will have to be more careful then ever when making in game decisions, because everything is final and there are more serious effects for the main characters.

The gamers will also have to pay more attention to how they manage their health and the ammunition for their weapons as each firefight and action sequence will be a little tougher than usual to complete.

The 1999 Mode for BioShock Infinite will not have permadeath but will drop the player to an actual Game Over screen as long as he lacks the significant resources that are needed for the main character to be revived.

Ken Levine, who is the creative director at Irrational Games, stated, “We want to give our oldest and most committed fans an option to go back to our roots. In 1999 Mode, gamers face more of the permanent consequences of their gameplay decisions. In BioShock Infinite, gamers will have to sweat out the results of their actions. In addition, 1999 Mode will demand that players pick specializations, and focus on them.”

He added, “I’m an old school gamer. We wanted to make sure we were taking into account the play styles of gamers like me. So we went straight to the horse’s mouth by asking them, on our website, a series of questions about how they play our games. 94.6 percent of respondents indicated that upgrade choices enhanced their BioShock gameplay experience; however, 56.8 percent indicated that being required to make permanent decisions about their character would have made the game even better.”
