Bigpoint, as the publisher, has announced that their browser based Battlestar Galactica Online MMO has entered the closed beta stage, where a significant number of fans of the show are able to experience the game for the first time and deliver feedback that the developers can then use in order to make the experience better.

Bigpoint says that thousands of players from both Europe and North America are taking part in the successful closed beta, greeted by a tutorial that allows them to play as a Human or a Cylon, before the game opens up and gives them the freedom to explore the universe.

In the closed beta of Battlestar Galactica Online players are able to conduct mining operations, take a tour of Galactica itself and of a Cylon basestar and explore other bases, both in space and on planets.

There are also battles to be fought, both Player versus the Environment and Players versus Player.

In December the Battlestar Galactica MMO will move on to an open beta phase and Bigpoint says that until then more and more players will be invited to the closed beta as the developer also aims to test out the infrastructure that they have created to support the video game.

The browser based MMO will offer gamers a mix of free exploration of game space, tactical space combat based around the well known starships and fighters seen in the television series and narrative structured missions.

Bigpoints has not talked about the story that Battlestar Galactica Online will offer, saying only that it will aim to explain some mysteries that were not tackled in the series.

The game uses the Unity engine and initial reports say that it looks well, despite the fact that everything is delivered to the player through a browser window.

Battlestar Galactica Online currently does not have a launch date.
