The cartoon-ish, free online shooter Battlefield Heroes needed a little pick me up, so developer Electronic Arts Digital Illusions CE AB, or DICE like they like to be called, plans a huge update. Entitled Heroes of the Fall, the new project hasn't received an official release date, but it's probably somewhere in autumn, considering the word play. Some of the changes mentioned include the Gunner class modifications, and improving the ranking system to better distinguish newcomers from game veterans. The information was released via the BF Heroes official site.

The Gunner receives an Explosive Keg, which detonates and dazes players caught in the blast. His Frenzy Fire ability will now heal him in direct proportion to the damage caused by the Gunner while under its effect. The biggest impact on gameplay will probably be the upgrade that his shield receives, which now has an area of effect and is not limited to the Gunner alone. Soldiers and Commandos close enough to a shielded Gunner will receive the extra cover as well.

Ranks will be granted to players after they reach level 10, and they will also obtain a title to display, be it on the battlefield or on their personal profile page. The pages themselves will also be modified and will be split into three distinct sections: Friends, Fans and Favourites. All these modifications come to revitalize the free-to-play shooter that was launched earlier this summer. The game proved to be a lot of fun to play, with rewarding gameplay and an innovative look into online shooters.

Battlefield Heroes is part of the Battlefield franchise, which incorporates successful titles such as Battlefield 1942, Battlefield Vietnam and Battlefield 2. The games offer a very similar gameplay at their core, with two opposite teams fighting for control of the map. Each team has an assigned number of tickets that the enemy can reduce to zero in two ways: by completing objectives, like conquering a base, or by killing the enemy forces. The round ends when a team's tickets reach zero. The game relies on a class gameplay, each class fulfilling a different role in the virtual war.
