The newly announced Batman: Arkham Origins is handled by a new development team at the Montreal studio of Warner Bros. and the game creators are looking to the character’s past to inspire their efforts.

Eric Holmes, the creative director in charge of the new project, tells GameInformer that, “The main inspiration for Arkham origins is the comic book series Legends of the Dark Knight. It’s a series that started in 1989 and followed in the wake of a big trend of going back in time to examine early career years which I think was started primarily from Batman: Year One.”

The comic book series is highly praised by Batman fans for the way it approached the character from a new angle and managed to redefine his nature.

There’s another reason why the Legends series is interesting to the development team at Warner Bros. Montreal.

Holmes adds, “Legends of the Dark Knight represented really important stories for the Batman mythologies because every time Batman met someone, or encountered some idea in the world – for example, the Venom drug – it was the first time he’d ever run across it rather than the 80th time.”

Batman: Arkham Origins also uses some elements from Year One, the ground-breaking Frank Miller creation, and continues many trends that have been introduced in previous games from Rocksteady.

The new game will emphasize Batman’s detective side and will allow him to scan crime areas for clues in order to then hunt down the perpetrators and deliver them to justice.

Players will also have access to new gadgets, although the core combat mechanics will be similar to previous Batman Rocksteady titles.

Batman: Arkham Origins is expected to arrive on the PC, the PlayStation 3 from Sony, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the Wii U from Nintendo during October of this year.
