14 DAY TRIAL // Yesterday was Valentine’s Day and, since love was in the air for regular people, so it was for Mattel’s internationally famous couple, Barbie and Ken. The legendary plastic couple decided to give their relationship another go on the special occasion.
Entertainment Weekly notes that Barbie – also known as the world’s oldest young woman – changed her Facebook status early yesterday, while also including an update on her page, hinting at a possible reunion.
Barbie and Ken went strong until 2004, when they suddenly decided things weren’t working for them anymore – and makers Mattel announced they would be going their separate ways.
Last year, the two met again, this time on the set of the blockbuster “Toy Story 3,” and realized that the flame they once had going on had still not gone out.
It would seem they decided to officially start dating again on the special day that is Valentine’s Day.
“Yesterday, Barbie hinted that something might be in the works on her Facebook page with the status update: ‘Who knows… maybe I’ll have a Valentine this year.’ Early this morning, Barbie changed her status on Facebook to ‘In a Relationship’,” EW says.
So, the e-zine contacted Mattel for a comment on whether Ken and Barbie are back together. As it turns out, they are.
“They were reunited as costars, as you know, on the set of Toy Story 3. As we like to put it, they found they were kind of missing each other. They had a lot of fun together,” Lisa McKnight, vice president of marketing at Mattel, says for EW.
“Now a little time has passed since the shoot and all the premiere noise around the movie and all that good stuff, and I think they both realized that they’re made for each other,” McKnight adds.
Since Ken and Barbie dated from 1961 to 2004 (they broke up on Valentine’s Day that year), they felt at the time they needed a breather from one another. But they know now that they belong together.
As a side note, after breaking up from Ken, Barbie dated Blain, an Australian surfer.
“To be fair to them, they have been together for about 43 years, so you know, I think everyone needs a break. So they took a little break and had fun out on their own and were certainly out and about, but I think ultimately, again, they were destined for each other,” McKnight adds.
