Great news and some horrible news, spiced by some pretty good news, which makes it OK news

In the wake of its PC Beta debut, DICE has decided that it would also be a good time to reestablish the cosmic ying-yang balance and to not let ourselves be overwhelmed by warm emotions. As such, Bad Company 2's blog has just posted the game's DRM, along with rich details on how it works. Cutting down on the long speech and right to the chase, BC2 will use SecuROM, but just like Bioshock 2 does, it will use a crippled, scaled-down version of it.

Overall, the blog revealed that, in Bad Company 2, "SecuROM does everything it can by running as a 'normal' program; it does not install any sort of kernel software. What this means is: No software is permanently installed on your machine, SecuROM is ONLY running when the game is running, When you uninstall the game, you will also uninstall the SecuROM software." But since there will be more than one version of Battlefield Bad Company 2 coming to our PCs, there will be more than one type of SecuROM as well.

"The main game executable (BFBC2Game.exe) of the Closed Beta will be wrapped with SecuROM." This is so that the title's code lines can't be stolen and used to crack the full version of it. Also, after the Beta is removed from our computers, SecuROM won't be leaving anything behind. As for the full game, SecuROM will be present here as well, in the executable file, as well as in some other support files. Authentication will be available in two options: offline, through the DVD, and online, by contacting the master server.

The DVD authentication is pretty cut and dry, and all you have to do is punch the DVD in your drive every time you want to play. As for the online activation, SecuROM will access DICE's servers and count how many computers has the specific serial key been used on. After that, SecuROM will never bother you again, and will let you authenticate the game on a total of ten machines. "One authentication is valid for 10,000 days. Thus, if you authenticated once on launch day – March 2nd, 2010 – that authentication will be valid until July 18th, 2037," the official blog read.
