It only makes perfect sense. A DS port was the next logical step for Assassin's Creed and by teaming up with Gameloft to develop the touchscreen prequel, we can only expect a great looking and playing Assassin's Creed by the end of the year. But why expect when we can already see what the game looks like...?

Well, it's not exactly in-game action we're here to share with you, but we can however give you a look at the boxart containing some screens and a bunch of features thanks to Go Nintendo reader Mikey who managed to snag the boxart when he went to GameStop to reserve the title. Take a look to the left (click to enlarge)

"Developed specifically for Nintendo DS, Assassin's Creed Altair's Chronicles tells the story of Altair before the events of the console version." says the cover. Looks like one of those serious action titles, not some rubbish handheld port.

Features

- pull off amazing acrobatic moves and explore a fully 3D-rendered medieval world - master swordfights, stealth assassinations, combo attacks, and a variety of weapons - use your stylus to interrogate informers and pickpocket precious items from the crowd

Gameloft is in on the development too, as confirmed by the company's logo on the back side of the cover. Gameloft mostly handles mobile (cell phone) games. They are best known for porting series such as Prince of Persia to cell phones.

According to an earlier interview with Michel Guillemot, the founder of Gameloft (issue 172 of Game Informer) the developing company was seriously looking to develop games for Nintendo's Wii: "The Wii is certainly a very interesting machine. At Gameloft, it's the creators that decide which machine they want to support based on what they think that can do on it. Clearly the Wii is a very good candidate because it's a great machine, it's a great gaming experience, and our creators are looking at it very seriously."

So of course, it didn't take them long to see the possibilities with Nintendo's handheld too, the DS. Quite frankly, Assassin's Creed Altair's Chronicles makes perfect sense - the game performs beautifully on mobile phones, being backed up by the tremendous hype surrounding its Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 counterparts, so making it for the most popular handheld gaming system out there was only the logical step for both Ubisoft and Gameloft.

Stay tuned for when Ubisoft (or Gameloft) make an official unveiling of the game. We'll be updating this story in the shortest time possible.
