175,000 are “game and entertainment titles” exclusively

The iTunes App Store is now home to 700,000 applications destined for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. That’s almost three quarters of a billion, and there are no signs of stopping either.

Developers enrolled with Apple’s annual $99 / €75 program have coded enough applications to keep us going for years without any new submissions. But why stop when the fun only increases with each new iDevice released from Cupertino.

The App Store now offers a selection of 700,000 apps, of which 175,000 are games and other entertainment apps. Apple quietly confirmed the figures earlier this week, shortly after the iPhone 5 debut.

With the hype surrounding the new smartphone, few took the time to notice (and report) on the feat.

“With the App Store on iPod touch, users have access to the world’s largest and best collection of over 700,000 apps, including over 175,000 game and entertainment titles,” reads the press release announcing Apple’s new line of iPods.

“Customers also have the iTunes Store at their fingertips, giving them instant access to the world’s largest catalog of over 26 million songs, 190,000 TV episodes, 45,000 movies and 1.5 million books to purchase and download directly to their iPod touch,” the company added.

And it’s really no surprise that Apple’s App Store continues to grow at an incredibly rapid pace.

With every new generation of devices comes a new opportunity to take advantage of new technologies through software.

The iPhone 5 doesn’t bring a lot of new things to the table, but its increased screen size is sure to pave the way for some awesome new games, such as the racer demoed by Electronic Arts on stage, during the iPhone 5 keynote.

Third-party developers have already been notified by Apple that iOS 6 GM is available for download to code apps for it. The SDK is waiting their download and the App Store their submissions.
