Apple has launched a new version of its post popular portable player, the fifth-generation iPod touch. Enhancements include a brilliant widescreen display, a dual-core A5 chip, a new design featuring anodized (and painted) aluminum, and an enhanced 5MP camera.

Cupertino says the new iPod touch is the thinnest iPod touch they’ve ever made. The 4-inch Retina display is the perfect compliment to the 5 megapixel iSight camera which shoots 1080p HD videos, as well as to the Apple-designed A5 chip, which runs everything twice as fast than before.

Siri, the intelligent voice assistant, is making its way into the iPod touch for the first time via iOS 6, “the world’s most advanced mobile operating system.”

Also a first for the redesigned player, the iTouch now comes in anodized aluminum design and five vibrant colors – pink, yellow, blue, white & silver, black & slate.

“The new iPod touch has been redesigned with a brilliant 4-inch Retina display in an ultra-thin and light anodized aluminum body—the thinnest iPod touch ever at just 6 mm thin and weighing just 88 grams,” says Apple.

“With Apple’s dual-core A5 chip inside, iPod touch delivers up to twice the processing power and up to seven times faster graphics than the fourth generation iPod touch, all while maintaining incredible battery life of up to 40 hours of music playback and up to eight hours of video playback,” the company adds.

Marketed as a “fun” device, the iPod touch should indeed make the perfect companion to Instagram, thanks to its 5 megapixel iSight camera with autofocus, image stabilization, face detection, and the all-new panorama feature.

There’s more. The new iPod touch comes with a color-matched iPod touch loop. It’s a wrist strap you can use while taking photos, recording videos and playing games, says Apple.

Finally, the new iTouch comes with the Lightning connector, which boasts an adaptive interface that uses only the signals that each accessory requires.

It’s also orientation-independent and works with an adapter sold separately by the Cupertino giant so that you can continue to use existing accessories on the market, such as car kits.

You can pre-order the player starting this Friday, September 14, and the device will start shipping in October, according to Apple. It starts at $299 / €230 for the 32GB model.
