Google's Eric Schmidt has just confirmed that the next generation Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system will be released in October or November.

During a recent press conference in San Francisco, Google's Executive Chairman let the information slip while discussing about the future of cloud computing with Salesforce.com's Marc Benioff.

We have a new operating system, internally known as Ice Cream Sandwich for some reason, which is being released in October/November, which everyone's really excited about,” said Schmidt.

Given all the previous rumors pointing to an October release for the Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, Schmidt's statement comes only as a confirmation.

However, it appears that a November release for the platform, which hopes to solve the fragmentation problem, is more realistic than an early October release.

In this regard, rumor has it that the Nexus Prime smartphone, possibly the first to be delivered with Ice Cream Sandwich on board, may be launched in late November or early December, which puts it in line with the release of the mobile platform.

On related news, the first Ice Cream Sandwich SDK might be just around the corner, as the first screenshots of the operating system leaked about a month ago.

According to Google, the next iteration of Android is meant to absorb all the elements from all the other versions of the operating system into a single universal mobile platform.

Although the upcoming platform is known as Ice Cream Sandwich, one may wonder why Schmidt wasn't so sure about the reasons why the platform received this codename from Google's developing team.
