Today, Dropox announced the release of a beta version of their Dropbox application for Android. For the time being, the new software solution arrives on Android handsets as a limited distribution, user-id locked download, and hasn't been included yet in the Android Market, the development team revealed.

“The first Android beta is finally here! The first 500 of you to signup will be allowed to link to your Dropbox to your Android :-). Please don't spread the download link as it will only link to accounts that sign up via http://www.dropbox.com/androidbeta - have fun testing and please report all bugs as you find them,” a recent post on the Dropox forums reads.

According to the development team, they are heading for the final release of the software solution, and they also expect for the app to soon arrive in the Android Market. For the moment, there are some features that do not work properly, such as importing media, which might not go well on all devices. Since different handsets handle this differently, there is still work to be done to ensure that it works well on all platforms.

The working features of the application include: Directory Browsing, showing metadata, and caching it for offline use. File Browsing for file types using viewers installed on your device (not currently caching for offline use). Search my Dropbox. Editing text files with the DropText text editor, and uploading the text to your Dropbox.

Dropbox outed a software solution for the Apple iPhone too, which comes with a few more features than the new release. As the development team indicates, the iPhone app features that were left outside this time include favorites and photo gallery. For what it's worth, enhancements to the solution should soon arrive, as its makers are set to come out with a final flavor of the application. Keep an eye on this space for additional info.
