HTC EVO 4G, the first 4G-capable Android smartphone the Taiwanese mobile phone maker HTC Corporation brought to the market, is on its way to receive an update to the newer Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform version, and the first Gingerbread ROM for the handset is now available into the wild.

It is only a test ROM, but it does show that HTC is working on building it up, and that the company would make it available for its users sooner rather than later.

According to some of the previous rumors on the matter, HTC would plan the upgrading of HTC EVO 4G sometime before the end of the second quarter of the year.

This means that the company would make the software update available for its EVO 4G at the same time as it would for the HTC Desire users (ThunderBolt too is expected to make the software available at that time).

The newly leaked ROM for the mobile phone emerged over at 911sniper, and also made an appearance on the XDA-Developer forum.

Members of the forum already managed to transform it into a working ROM, with many of the features up and running.

Unfortunately, EVO 4G users won't be able to taste the Android 2.3 Gingerbread with the full HTC Sense 3.0 experience on top of it, since the hardware inside this device is rather old.

Yesterday, HTC confirmed in a series of tweets that it won't deliver the new software to older devices due to hardware limitations, but that some of the features included in the new Sense 3.0 will be available for them as well.

Until the company decides to share more details on this with the world, users might want to have a look at the said ROM, which can be found on XDA-Developers here. Just keep in mind that it is only a test ROM, and that not all features might work as wanted.
