Taiwanese mobile phone maker HTC is reportedly gearing up for the release of an Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system upgrade for two of the 4G-capable handsets it released on shelves in the United States, namely ThunderBolt

and EVO 4G.

According to some of the latest news around the web, the company might be set to make the software update available for its customers as soon as this quarter.

No specific info on when the OS upgrade might be made available for either of the two handsets is known for the time being, but it seems that the move has been already confirmed, though not in an official manner.

Answering to an inquiry about the software update, an HTC representative said that the update would arrive in the near future (via talkandroid):

I’m happy to inform you that both the Evo and the Thunderbolt are definitely on our list to receive the 2.3 Android OS update.

At this time, we don’t have an exact launch date, nor are we. However, we estimate that it will be available in the second quarter of 2011 (anywhere from the beginning of April, to the end of June), assuming that there are no major setbacks.

While this can indeed be considered a confirmation of HTC's plans to upgrade the two handsets, something that does not come too much as a surprise, it still remains to be seen when exactly the update could arrive.

For the time being, it appears that HTC might be set to make it available for download for ThunderBolt and EVO 4G at the same time as it would release it for its Desire family of handsets, which would make sense in a way.

However, we should still wait for a formal announcement on this to be made before getting our hopes too high. Stay tuned for more info on the matter.
