Verizon Wireless has just announced plans to deliver the much expected Android 2.2 Froyo update for one of the most popular devices in its lineup, the DROID by Motorola. According to the company, there are a wide range of enhancements and improvements included in the upcoming solution, many already familiar to users, such as support for Adobe Flash Player 10.1 beta for Android, increased security options, and a wide range of other enhancements.

Some of these enhancements include: - Improved Web browsing with Adobe Flash Player 10.1 beta for Android, now available for download via Market. - New security options including remote device wipe and device lock, password complexity, and minimum password length. - New tips, shortcuts, and assistance from a home-screen widget help users better navigate their phones. - Easily switch between the eight most recent applications. - Camera’s video mode now uses LED flash, and on-screen buttons make it easy to control zoom, white balance, focus, exposure, and geo-tagging. - Camcorder functions also provide easy-to-use formatting for uploading to YouTube or MMS. - Enhanced browser performance for faster loading of JavaScript- heavy pages. - Keep original home-page icon locations after an over-the-air update. - Easy shortcuts for access to the phone, application launcher, and browser from any of the five home screens.

According to Big Red's announcement, the Android 2.2 Froyo software update would arrive on the original DROID by Motorola as soon as next week. The carrier has been recently rumored to plan delivering the update to its entire DROID family of devices before mid-August, and it seems that the first handset in the series would also be the first one to get it.

“Android 2.2 boosts mobile organization and response time. Dedicated shortcuts make it easy to access the phone, application launcher, and browser from any of the five home screens. Enjoy improved security with the addition of numeric and alphanumeric password options. And now Microsoft Exchange administrators can manage password policies across all devices, making sure company information stays secure and safe. Stay on top of your game by syncing your Exchange email account to your phone and auto-completing recipient addresses with Global Address List look-up. And Android 2.2 now supports Exchange calendars in the Calendar application,” is what the company notes in a document (PDF link) describing the software update.

There is little doubt regarding the upcoming arrival of this solution, especially with Verizon publishing a lot of details on it, and with Motorola announcing via its support forum that the solution is close to release day. On its support website, the carrier describes the update process through which its customers would get the FRG01B update on their devices, which is nothing else than the Android 2.2 Froyo update, as the shots available there show. One thing that remains to be seen is when would the carrier start pushing out the update for other DROID devices on its airwaves.
