As an OTA update

Just as promised last week, the Taiwan-based mobile phone maker HTC Corporation has started the roll-out of the Android 2.2 Froyo software update for its European version of the high-end HTC Desire. According to the handset vendor, the new firmware update would be delivered over the air to all unlocked Desire units out there, and brings forth an updated version of HTC Sense too.

You can now download the latest software update for new features and improved performance. It won’t delete any of your content and we’d recommend using a Wi-Fi connection as this is a large update. If not, standard data connection charges may apply. […] After installing the update, you can confirm a successful update by confirming the Firmware version (From the Home Screen go to MENU> Settings> About Phone> Firmware version). The new Firmware version will be 2.2. Update Information: Android 2.2 and HTC Sense update,” is what HTC has to say about the software solution on its support website.

As stated above, the Android 2.2 Froyo update for HTC Desire would be delivered over the air to all owners of an unlocked device, while carrier specific versions of the mobile phone would receive the solution at a later time. In case there are some who do not want to download the new update over the air, they might want to wait several days before the handset vendor makes it available for a manual download from its website, just as it did with other similar solutions in the past.

Those who would like to install the software on their HTC Desire devices right away should consider performing a backup of all data on the handset prior to launching the update process. HTC recommends backing up all personal info on the phone too, as these files might be erased during the installation. Keep an eye on this space to learn when the Android 2.2 Froyo update for Desire would be made available for a manual download.
