The president and Chief Executive Officer of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe says that the PlayStation 3 has the potential to be the most successful console of the current generation and outlines plans for the future of the brand.

Speaking at the Gamescom press conference of the company that executive, who joked that he tried to get Kevin Butler to do the presentation for him but that he reached a celebrity status that no longer allows such appearances, was optimistic about the future of the PlayStation 3, Sony's main games platform.

The PlayStation 3 Slim represents a “shift of momentum” for Sony and the wider video game market.

The company believes that sales of 16 million in the European area that SCEE manages prove that the Slim did not just improve sales for the platform in the short term but changed the way gamers thought about the Sony home console and about its Microsoft made rival.

House also pointed out that video games that are coming exclusive to the PlayStation 3 had better overall scores of aggregation site Metacritic than its rivals.

Sony current stands on 80 while with the scores associated with the Nintendo Wii coming second on 77 and the Xbox 360 showing in third place with 76.

The twin powers of full three dimensional gaming and the launch of the motion tracking Move system are set to make the PlayStation 3 an even more desirable device, House implied, with most of the Sony conference focused on how the two technologies change gaming and the expectations of the player.

The focus was on the PlayStation 3 but Andrew House also talked about the PlayStation Portable and about the new titles coming to the 9.99 priced Essentials range of games, designed to attract those players who havelots of time but limited monetary resources.

The PlayStation 2 was not forgotten and House stated there is “plenty of life in the old dog yet”.
