Amy Winehouse was a ticking, walking time bomb. When word of her death broke, a collective “well, that was to be expected” was heard online. Even her mother, Janis, is telling the press she saw that coming.

The day before her body was found in her London apartment, on Friday, Amy met Janis for lunch, the latter says in a statement cited by Us Magazine.

It was then that Janis realized that it was “only a matter of time” before she got the dreadful call to announce her that her daughter was gone.

“She seemed out of it. But her passing so suddenly still hasn’t hit me,” Janis says in the statement.

When she and Amy parted ways for what would be the last time, Janis recalls, Amy kissed her on the cheek and saw her off with the words, “I love you, mum.”

“They are the words I will always treasure. I’m glad I saw her when I did,” Janis now says.

Mitch Winehouse, Amy’s father, found out about the tragedy as he landed in the US, where he was to hold a series of jazz concerts.

He cancelled all appearances and flew immediately to London “to be with Amy.”

The family has also issued a statement on Amy’s death, asking for the media to respect their privacy at this difficult time.

“Our family has been left bereft by the loss of Amy, a wonderful daughter, sister, niece. She leaves a gaping hole in our lives. We are coming together to remember her and we would appreciate some privacy and space at this terrible time,” reads the statement.

For the time being, the exact cause of death is not known. Because it’s too easy to assume that the singer OD’ed given her lifestyle and reports she went out to buy drugs the night before, police representatives are asking the media and fans not to jump to any conclusions.

An autopsy will be performed today and its results presumably made public. Amy was 27 years old.
