One of the most talented singers of our times – and perhaps the most troubled as well – is no longer with us. Amy Winehouse, the British diva who won over the hearts of millions with her deep, gorgeous voice, was found dead in her London apartment only hours ago.

Amy was only 27 years old and, while it is unknown yet whether drugs had anything to do with her death, she had a long history of abuse.

The multi-Grammy winning singer was found unresponsive in her London flat, police statements have confirmed for the media. She was already dead when ambulances arrived on the scene.

TMZ reports that sources familiar with the investigation say that there were no signs of foul play but, for the time being, police are not saying a word about the cause of death.

“Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased,” the police statement to the aforementioned media outlet reads.

“On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene,” the statement says.

“Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained,” adds the same report.

An autopsy is scheduled to take place tomorrow, when more will be known about what led to Amy’s unexpected and tragic demise.

Just last month, after another short stint in rehab, Amy was forced to cancel her entire European tour after just one performance, when she took to the stage so intoxicated that she could barely stand, let alone perform in a satisfactory manner.

As reports swirled that she had relapsed into drugs again, her management said she would retire from the spotlight for another while to focus on her personal issues.

Last week, Amy was photographed by British paparazzi out and about London, looking better than she had in months, which prompted her fans to hope that she was finally getting around to kicking the addiction that had already ruined her life.

She will be missed.
