Actress remains on involuntary psychiatric hold for another 2 weeks for her own safety

Over a week ago, retired actress Amanda Bynes was put on an involuntary 5150 psychiatric hold pending evaluation. The initial 72 hours were extended to 2 weeks, and the decision was upheld by a judge after a hearing at which the actress was also present.

Nothing official on Amanda’s condition or hospitalization has been released to the press, but TMZ writes that the actress and her attorney were present in front of a judge to argue that there were no grounds for her to remain in the institution.

Their request was denied, with the judge ordering an additional two weeks on involuntary hold until Bynes’ mental evaluation is complete and she’s no longer considered a danger to herself or others.

“Our sources say Amanda's lawyer argued at today's hearing the actress was capable of caring for herself and she was not a danger to others,” TMZ writes.

“Amanda is actually doing a lot better since doctors have started giving her a cocktail of meds. We're told there are clear signs Amanda is schizophrenic,” adds the same media outlet.

Bynes might be showing signs of improvement because of the new medication, but the judge ruled that further supervision is in order to determine if it’s not just a temporary one.

“In the end the judge agreed with the doctors, that Amanda needed to stay in the hospital because her mental situation is still precarious,” TMZ says.

“Amanda does not acknowledge she has a mental illness, and doctors believe there's more than a good chance she would not take the meds that have stabilized her if she's out on her own,” adds the report.

Meanwhile, her parents are still trying to obtain a temporary conservatorship over her, arguing that she spent a fortune in the short time since she moved from Los Angeles to New York.

Their initial request was denied pending the judge’s decision to extend the 5150 hold.
