South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics was rumored not too long ago to be planning the release of a new, high-end smartphone running under the Android platform sometime in early 2011, a successor to the namely the Samsung Galaxy S, and it appears that the first firmware for the device has just made an appearance on the web.

The announcement was made via a tweet from SamFirmware, while the actual file was already made available for download via various websites around.

“Model: GT-I9200 | Code: XXX | Version: I9200XXJP2/I9200XXJP1/I9200XXJP1 | Date: 18.11.2010 22:40 | Size: 272,89 MB | ID: 3489397051,” the aforementioned tweet reads.

The aforementioned tweet, as well as the initial post on this thread over at XDA-Developers Forum point at a possible firmware for the Galaxy GT-I9200 handset.

Some of the info that was extracted from the software includes:

[Build] Date=2010.11.03; Time=16:30:15;

- FM radio

- UBIFS

- Bluetooth

bluetooth 3 libbluetooth 3 libbluetooth3 libbluetooth3.shlibs

- Camera

Konica Minolta Camera, Inc.

According to some of those who already played a little with the file, there are some inconsistencies there, and this might not actually be the firmware for the next high-end Android-based smartphone from Samsung.

The guys over at XDA-Developers suggest that what is inside the archive might point at a flash file system developed by Nokia, namely UBIFS, or “UBI File-System.”

Of course, it might still be some time before the file is properly analyzed, and only then we will be able to learn more on the firmware and on the handset. For the time being, however, the general consensus would be that the OS is not Gingerbread, even if some might have expected it to be so.

As for the device itself, it's still unclear whether this GT-I9200 is a new Android handset from Samsung, or there was just a typo in its name, and that we're actually looking at the GT-I9020, which was spotted into the wild before as the Nexus S.

Some info on another high-end device from Samsung also emerged, supposedly the actual successor of the Galaxy S, but that phone was said to sport the model number GT-I9100.

Hopefully, it won't be long until specific info on this firmware and on the device it would be targeted at emerge, so keep an eye on this space for more.
