Sony Ericsson has just confirmed that it will push Android 2.3.4Gingerbread to all Xperia smartphones that were launched during 2011, beginning October.

The announcement puts an end to all the questions regarding the Android 2.3.4 update for Sony Ericsson's 2011 Xperia phones.

According to Sony Ericsson, the software upgrade will be pushed in phases starting from October 2011. Depending on the region they are located in, users might receive the update sooner or later.

The handset manufacturer is not sure yet about the delivery method and stated that Xperia owners will either receive a notification instructing them to download the software OTA (over the air) via 3G or WiFi, or they will have the option to connect to a computer and download it via PC companion.

Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread is the latest major update before Google launches the next-generation Ice Cream Sandwich platform.

Furthermore, the update brings very important changes to all 2011 Xperia devices, as they will receive new features, including Google Talk with Video Chat for smartphones with front-facing cameras.

In addition, the updated Facebook inside Xperia functionality for enhanced like, share and discover abilities will be included as well.

Other highlights of the Android 2.3.4 software upgrade for 2011 Xperia smartphones include:

- Xperia smartphones introducing world’s first 3D sweep panorama functionality powered by Sony; - The software upgrade will enable consumers to turn their Xperia smartphone into a mini-mobile PC by connecting USB peripherals (mouse, keyboard or game controller) to Sony Ericsson LiveDock multimedia station. Connect the smartphone to a TV via HDMI to get a big screen experience; - Swipe text input – text input by swiping the finger from one letter to the next; - Screen capture – allows the user to share a screen grab from anywhere in the phone.

On related news, the first Sony Ericsson smartphone to be delivered with Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread out-of-the-box will the Xperia neo V, which is expected to hit shelves in Q4.
