Japanese-Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson has finally started delivering the Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread software update for its Xperia X10 smartphones.

The availability of this OS upgrade was announced several months ago, when the mobile phone maker also unveiled a few details on what will be included with the software.

Earlier this week, the company posted on a series of its European websites details on what was included with the update, stating that the roll-out process has already started.

However, it seems that the info was erroneously posted, and that the actual deployment process was bound to start only a few days later.

Reports on the first bits landing on devices have started to emerge since last night, suggesting that the actual delivery is now undergoing.

The new software update will come as firmware 3.0.1.G.0.75 on Baseband 2.1.71 and Kernel 2.6.29-00054-g5f01537, it seems.

Moreover, just as Sony Ericsson also confirmed a few days ago, the update will bring Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread on devices, and not the initial Android 2.3 flavor of the OS.

At the moment, users in only a small number of countries have started to receive the software update, but it should not be too long before the update starts being pushed on more handsets.

For those out of the loop, we should note that some of the main enhancements the new software update is set to bring to devices include:

- Facebook inside Xperia – a series of unique integrations of Facebook into your multimedia apps, phonebook and calendar - The possibility to use your phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot - Music player with equalizer - USB tethering – share your 3G data connection via the USB connector - Photo widget – one click access to your photo gallery app - App tray sorting – arrange your apps in the order you want them.

When receiving the notification on the availability of Gingerbread for their devices, Xperia X10 users should back up all files on the phone, so that no important information is lost during the process.

The update will be performed via the Sony Ericsson PC Companion application, which can be downloaded from Softpedia as well, via this link.
