Drum kits joining guitar heroes

If there is one thing game developers know really well, that is the fact that successful franchises should never be dropped and new expansions/add ons/new iterations should be released on a regular basis. It is not a surprise to hear that Activision is working on yet another Guitar Hero game, dubbed Guitar Hero World Tour. The game will be released on all consoles (Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PlayStation 2, Nintendo Wii) sometime during this fall, probably as close to the holidays as possible.

The game will feature a newly redesigned guitar, an electronic drum kit and a microphone, as well as an innovative Music Studio music creator that lets players compose, record, edit and share their own rock and roll anthems, along with online Band Career and 8-player "Battle of the Bands." Of course, the most interesting thing is the drum kit (already rumored), which will probably take Guitar Hero one step closer to becoming Rock Band. Or vice-versa.

"Guitar Hero has set the standard for music-based gaming and with Guitar Hero World Tour and the game's groundbreaking Music Studio, we are once again delivering unprecedented innovation that has the potential to revolutionize consumer generated music, much in the same way that video sharing hubs have driven user generated video," said Dusty Welch, Head of Publishing for RedOctane. "With the introduction of our advanced high-quality new wireless instruments, in-depth customization options and advanced online functionality, the game enables music fans and gamers globally to share in the most social and expressive music experience ever."

Guitar Hero World Tour will deliver more ways of playing it than before, by allowing virtual rock stars to live their virtual lives either as single instrument specialist or multiple instrument players. Also, a new online mode called Battle of the Bands will be introduced to the game, which means that eight players will be able to split up in two bands and test their skills against one another. Everything sounds fine - a question remains though: why is this game still called Guitar Hero? The drummer boys and girls will feel neglected!
