Iconia tab A500 was supposed to get an update to the newest OS version sometime next month, but it looks like things have moved faster than expected, as said update has already leaked.

When it comes to the tablet market, since it definitely has consolidated its position as a stable segment in its own right, there are two main types of news.

One is the sort that deals with the arrival of new models, whether they are updated versions of existing one (with better hardware) or completely new items.

The other sort is news about software updates, similar to how smartphones and the like seem to get better software and tweaks all the time.

It is the latter sort of news that owners of a certain tablet from Acer will be glad to hear about.

Those keeping track of things on the slate segment will likely have learned of the new software update plans for the Acer Iconia tab A500.

For those in need of a memory refresh, it was said that the slate would get the Android 3.1 operating system on July 5, 2011.

Turns out, however, that users won't really have to wait so long for the extra functionality, refinements and tweaks, like resizable widgets.

Granted, the wait would not have really lasted more than a week or so, but the fact is that the update has already been leaked in China.

Normally, this would not be such a huge cause for joy, but even though the leak was made there, the download can be done from any part of the world.

As a reminder, the A500 is a 10-inch tablet based on the NVIDIA Tegra 2 SoC (system-on-chip) platform and has 1 GB of RAM, Full HD video support, 16 GB of built-in NAND Flash storage and a microSD memory card slot (allows an extra 32 GB).
