ATI has introduced another chipset for laptops, namely Mobility Radeon X1600, the first mobile GPU (Graphic Processing Unit) that features ATI's Avivo technology. The new chipset brings 1 billion colors to the laptops, creating vivid images for advanced photorealism.

The new ATI mobile chipset uses Microsoft's Shader Model 3.0 and supports DirectX9. It introduces PowerPlay 6.0, conserving battery life. Produced using the 90 nm fabrication process, Mobility Radeon X1600 has a great performance per watt efficiency, making it ideal for thin and performance laptops.

ATI claims it supports Microsoft's future generation OS (operating system), Windows Vista, including support for the WVDM (Windows Vista Display Driver). Also, the Avivo technology enables 40 bit color (10 bit for each red, blue, green and alpha channel). The whole quality image will be though shown only by compatible LCD displays.

By investing early in new visual technologies and design processes, such as TSMC's industry-leading 90nm technology, ATI is trying to raise the performance bar for mobile graphics.

Phil Eisler, Vice President and General Manager, Mobile and Chipset Business Unit, ATI Technologies said that "ATI is once again breaking new visual ground with the introduction of Mobility Radeon X1600 and we are poised to maintain our leadership in the performance thin notebook segment of the market."
