Bring Android 2.1 on a 4-inch display

Wireless carrier AT&T and Samsung Mobile have recently announced the launch of a new handset on the United States market, the Samsung Captivate, a Galaxy S smartphone. The new mobile phone runs under Google's Android 2.1 operating system, boasts a 4-inch touchscreen display, and packs inside a wide range of entertainment features, messaging and social networking capabilities.

According to the wireless carrier, the Web-based features of Captivate go perfectly hand in hand with its AT&T High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 Mbps technology. Moreover, users choosing the new device should benefit from the results of the operator's aim at mobilizing everything, including video content, social networking, music and messaging.

Based on the Android platform, the Samsung Captivate includes a nice range of high-end smartphone features. It comes with support for Google services such as Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Google Talk and more, while offering access to the Android Market, where thousands of applications are available for download.

“With the launch of the Captivate, AT&T customers will experience a groundbreaking handset with world class features that are unique to Samsung’s Galaxy S class of devices, including Samsung’s Super AMOLED screen technology and 1GHz Hummingbird Application Processor,” Omar Khan, chief strategy officer for Samsung Mobile, said. “The Captivate represents a new breed of smartphone that will truly change and enrich the way consumers interact with their device on an everyday basis.”

The specifications list of the new device includes the Super AMOLED display screen technology, a 1 GHz processor, a six-axis sensor, 5.0-megapixel photo snapper with video-recording capabilities and auto focus, a 3.5-mm headphone jack, 16 GB of internal memory, a GPS receiver, Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n), the Bluetooth 3.0 technology, and a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 16 GB of additional storage space. HD video recording (720p), MP3 player, access to Samsung Media Hub, Samsung’s Social Hub and ActiveSync support are other features of the new device.

“Add up Captivate’s amazing screen, huge amounts of onboard storage, a super-fast processor, all fueled by the nation’s fastest 3G network and a nationwide Wi-Fi network and you get a smartphone we know our customers will crave,” Jeff Bradley, senior vice president, Devices, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets, said. The new mobile phone is expected to become available for purchase at AT&T over the coming months, both via the carrier's website and in all AT&T retail locations nationwide.
