Blind or visually impaired AT&T customers who own an Android smartphone can now download a dedicated app, which will allow them to access and use their Android device faster and easier

The AT&T Mobile Accessibility Lite application is a now available as a free download from Android Market.

While the full version of the application requires a one time $99 fee, AT&T decided to go live with a custom version of the screen-access application, Mobile Accessibility.

Developed by Code Factory, the software features a range of accessible apps that allows users to can access the most common function of their Android devices.

As the first wireless carrier worldwide to offer Mobile Accessibility Lite, we are thrilled to make Android accessible to all of our customers,” said Carlton Hill, vice president, Consumer Devices, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets.

The application comprises no less than 11 function-dedicated apps: Phone, Contacts, SMS, Alarm, Calendar, Email, Web, Where Am I, Apps, Music Player and Settings.

Obviously, all apps have been built to make blind and visually impaired users life much easier when they want to use some of their Android device features.

All 11 apps can be placed on the home screen for later use. The Nuance Vocalizer voice synthesis reads the text when users hover their fingers over the name of the app.

This will allow users to perform a range of tasks, such as answering a call, managing their contacts, writing an SMS, editing a calendar entry, or sending an email.

AT&T Mobile Accessibility Lite will be available for free for a limited time from Android Market and is compatible with all devices running Android 2.1 and above.

However, it is important to note that speech recognition is only supported with Android 2.2 Froyo and above.
