As announced, Katy Perry opened the 2013 American Music Awards, held last night at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles and airing on ABC, with a live performance of her new single off her most recent studio album “Prism,” “Unconditionally.” You can see it in full and in HD above.

If you thought she couldn’t possibly top her performance at MTV’s European Music Awards from earlier this month, which saw her soar through the air like a gorgeous butterfly, you were wrong.

For this special occasion, Katy and her dancers recreated the magic of Japan, dressing up as geishas and dancing against a gorgeous backdrop. There was some flying too, but none for Katy – though she did disappear into thin air at the end of the gig.

As if the performance weren’t incredible enough already…

At the same awards show, Katy’s good friend Rihanna was presented with the Icon Award, but she also won Favorite Female Artist – Soul/R&B.
