Many video game consoles have used proprietary solid state memory cards to store data, especially since games started being distributed in read-only optical discs. The Xbox (old version) is the "proud" owner of an 8 MB memory card while the newer version, Xbox 360, is equipped with a 64 MB memory card. The newest version yet is not a 256 MB memory card as everyone was expecting but an amazing 512 MB one in response to gamer demand.

As some of you may remember, the size of downloadable demos via Xbox Live was pushed to 250 MB and one of the most desired ones is the 97 MB Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. So the decision to release a memory card with a larger capacity to store information came right away. As Microsoft developed the original Xbox console, online gaming was designated one of the key pillars for the greater Xbox strategy.

The new memory card for the Xbox 360 is going to be capable of storing 512 MB of information, but it will be a little pricey too: 49.99. That's 10 bucks more expensive than the old 64 MB one. No matter, desperate gamers who would do anything to save their progress and show off their achievements to friends are sure to get one.

Oh, and what about what they said about Microsoft awarding high ranking players? If it turns out to be a real program, then the new memory card is going to sell like water in the desert.

March 1st is the day it will hit the shops and while some say it's not a very good deal as the Xbox is also equipped with a hard drive, many will see the true advantages that come with being able to save everything you want without worrying so much about space.
