HTC is already working on it

Taiwan-based mobile phone maker HTC Corporation announced not too long ago that it has kicked off the process of upgrading the operating system on one of its most popular devices, the HTC Desire. We're referring here to the roll-out of the Android 2.2 Froyo software update for the device, which started this week, and which should include all of the unlocked Desire devices available on the European market. However, carrier specific versions of the handset won't taste Froyo as soon as unlocked models, but at a later time, and 3UK's flavor is among them.

According to the wireless carrier, the plan would be to make the Android 2.2 Froyo update available for its users in a matter of weeks. 3UK says that HTC is already working on the custom software update the phone requires on its airwaves, and that it should be able to offer it to users before the end of summer. It all comes as good news for 3UK's customers, though it remains to be seen whether the OS upgrade would land on time or not.

“Although the HTC Desire update was released for unlocked phones last week, HTC are building a specific version for Three which will take them a few weeks. Once we have this version it will be tested, approved by Google and then rolled out to customers. Although it goes without saying that we will get the update to customers ASAP, it’s likely to be towards the end of summer until we can guarantee a problem free version for our customers,” the wireless carrier announced a recent article on phandroid notes.

This is not the first time HTC announces a similar move for its high-end devices. The HTC Hero, launched on the market last year with Android 1.5 on board, was upgraded to Android 2.1 in June, but only unlocked versions of the device received the software update. Carrier specific flavors were said to receive it several weeks later, but only a few operators started to offer the software to their users. The HTC Desire seems to be in a similar situation, though more carriers might step up soon announcing the near delivery of the Froyo update.
